Travel Medicine
What is Travel Medicine?
Travel Medicine is the medical field dedicated to the prevention, assessment, and management of health risks associated with travel, particularly to international destinations or regions with specific sanitary conditions.
This area of medicine operates before, during, and after travel, through personalised advice, administration of vaccines, prescription of preventive medication, and guidance on health precautions in different geographical, climatic, and epidemiological contexts.
At Cordeiro Saúde, Travel Medicine provides attentive and individualised care, taking into account the destination, duration of travel, type of activities, the traveller’s health status, and any pre-existing conditions. Whenever necessary, Travel Medicine also works in coordination with other specialties such as General and Family Medicine or Infectious Diseases.

Frequently asked questions about Travel Medicine
When should I book a Travel Medicine consultation?
Ideally, the consultation should take place 4 to 8 weeks before travel, to allow sufficient time for vaccinations and preventive planning.
For which destinations is a travel consultation recommended?
In general, Travel Medicine consultations are recommended for destinations in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia.
Is a travel consultation necessary even for short trips?
Yes. Even short trips may involve health risks, depending on the destination, planned activities, and the traveller’s health status.
What should I do if I develop symptoms after returning from a trip?
If symptoms occur after returning (e.g. fever, persistent diarrhoea, skin changes, prolonged cough, or general malaise), you should seek medical evaluation as soon as possible. It is essential to inform the doctor about the countries or regions visited, the duration of travel, activities undertaken, and the date of return, as some travel-related diseases may appear days or weeks later.
