Dental treatments under general anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry
Paediatric Dentistry is the dental medicine speciality that prevents, cares for and treats the oral health of children from birth to adolescence.
Children are not "miniature adults", so they require specific care in a consultation with particularities not only from the point of view of oral rehabilitation, but also of their entire psychological and emotional context.
There are situations in which dental treatments, due to their complexity or the child's safety, are not possible to perform using only local anaesthesia, and it is indicated to perform them under general anaesthesia.
General anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry is indicated for:
- non-cooperative children with negative prior history;
- patients with special needs;
- multiple cavities in babies or children;
- complicated surgeries (lingual/labial frenulum, extraction of supernumerary teeth, oral pathology) in non-cooperative children.
Scheduling, if necessary, always requires prior assessment with one of the paediatric dentists on our team.
